The Story Behind Panevino

Where the Past Meets the Present

CHARACTER & CHARM

Enjoy Authentic Italian in a Welsh Heritage Property

We have been successfully running our riverside restaurant in Chepstow since 2019, but it’s still hard not to feel humbled by the fact that Panevino occupies an historic building (Grade II listed) that has stood here on the banks of the River Wye for around 300 years.

Situated strategically between the magnificent Chepstow Castle and the Old Wye Bridge that links Wales to England, locals know the building as Afon Gwy. One of its previous incarnations, still fondly remembered, was as the Half-Moon Inn. In days of yore, when it was a merchant’s house, the town pump was in front of the building, and behind it there is still a fascinating tidal well and vaulted cistern.

Such is the view of Chepstow Castle from here that it inspired one of England’s most-loved romantic artists, JMW Turner, to paint it in 1794 when he was just 19. Turner captured the Panevino building – designated back then simply as a “cottage” – in the scene. That painting now hangs on permanent exhibition in the nearby Chepstow Museum.

We feel privileged to be offering a special Italian dining experience in such an historically significant setting. The charm and character of this building and its garden provides the perfect ambience for relaxed hospitality, complementing our authentic Italian menu.

Growing Strong Since 2019

We opened the doors to Panevino with a flourish in 2019, quickly becoming a popular spot for both locals and tourists to kick back and relax over a classic Italian meal.

A year later along came the Covid Pandemic. Not to be beaten by this disease, we switched from table service to take-aways for the duration of the lockdowns and emerged smiling and solvent on the other side. We still offer takeaways, which remain extremely popular.

We welcome walk-ins and will always do our best to accommodate you, but we’ve introduced an online booking system because of ever-increasing demand for tables in our restaurant. We don’t want to keep you waiting, or rush you through your meal – our style is to give you a serene dining experience in tranquil surroundings.

Consistent Praise From Contented Customers

It’s the dine-in experience, however, that we are gratified to find most of our customers appreciate and we’re proud to say we consitently receive 5-star feedback.
